A campaign to give local people ownership of a North Belfast wood has taken a step forward with the set up of a unique Twitter account for a tree. A horse chestnut tree in Throne Wood, between the Antrim Road and Whitewell Road, has been given its own Twitter account @HorseChestnut1.  The tree began tweeting on the micro blogging site last month.

It has been set up to keep local people, who use social media, informed about the activities that will be happening in the wood that will help ensure that Throne Wood will be there for future generations to enjoy.

A recent successful public meeting to rally local support for Throne Wood, saw a number of people volunteer to start up a group called ‘Friends of Throne Wood’.

As a result a series of woodland activities have been organised by local charity Groundwork to take place in the wood over the coming months.  The next one is on Saturday 23 June and will involve clearing some choked waterways.

Anyone interested should meet at the main entrance to the wood on the Antrim Road just opposite Thronemount at 10.30am on Saturday 23rd June 2012.  An information leaflet may be obtained by ringing Madeleine Kelly Groundwork Northern Ireland 028 9074 9494 or by emailing Madeleinekelly@groundworkni.co.uk
