Memorial launch to be dedicated to Pat Finucane

Truth call ahead of report

By Ciara Quinn

A MURAL dedicated to murdered West Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane will be unveiled on Sunday, days before the publication of the de Silva report on his killing.

The legal review, carried out by Sir Desmond de Silva QC, will be released to the family next Wednesday, December 12.

Speaking ahead of the unveiling of the memorial dedicated to Pat Finucane and the murdered Lurgan solicitor Rosemary Nelson, Relatives for Justice Chairperson Clara Reilly called on families affected by state-sponsored violence to unite in their call for truth.

The RFJ Chair urged all victims from all backgrounds interested in truth to support the Finucane family, adding, “we all have a stake in the truth about what happened to Pat.”

“In supporting one another and making a unified call for truth we stand as one with an effective voice about the policies and practices that took so many lives of our loved ones,” said Clara.

“Truth is universal and on Sunday we will turn out to show our support and solidarity with the Finucane family on the eve of the publication of the de Silva review and to express our collective voice on the need for a proper independent inquiry. We will remember all those killed and injured in the conflict regardless of their circumstance – we are about truth for all.

“de Silva is yet again a roadblock, albeit somewhat more subtle than previous ones, but nevertheless people should not be fooled into believing that this is satisfactory for the Finucane family or the wider issue that is collusion. It is more about concealing and managing – it is essentially more cover-up.

“It is ironic that in his life’s work Pat, like Rosemary, assisted families to uncover the truth and seek justice and in his death – and in his memory – that search goes on and will inevitably lift the lid on the can of worms that is collusion exposing the extent and full truth of a policy that claimed his and so many lives across our entire community.”

Pat Finucane’s brother Séamus told the Andersonstown News that the mural unveiling on Sunday was aimed at gathering as much support as possible for the Finucane family ahead of the forthcoming publication of the de Silva review.

“We are very thankful for the people who helped us repair and restore Pat’s mural at the Falls Council. It’s very timely that the mural launch comes prior to the de Silva report,” he said. “The family have not had any input or sight of the report as yet. Given our previous experience in Downing Street we need to be very cautious and very guarded. This report in our view is to protect government interests and not the family’s.”

The mural will be unveiled on Sunday, December 9, at 2pm. Guest speaker will be Gerry Adams TD. All are welcome to attend.
