Parade commissions udderly fabulous cow

A group of kids from the New Lodge have used their ‘udderly’ fantastic artistic skills to pay a moo-ving tribute to their area.

Next week a colourful fibreglass cow designed by children from New Lodge Arts and depicting images of the area will take part in one of the world’s biggest public art exhibitions.

The Cow Parade, which has visited 75 cities worldwide including Chicago, Paris, and Mexico City, comes to Belfast this month.

Earlier this year the group from New Lodge Arts began designing their cow – one of around 200 to go on display across the city.

The New Lodge cow, which proudly displays images from the area, will join the Cow Parade when it is officially launched next Thursday (July 19) at Belfast City Hall.

The cows will then be on display in various locations throughout the city before being sold at auction for charity later in the year.

It is hoped that the New Lodge cow will end up grazing somewhere in North Belfast, with the Waterworks park one suggested location.

“The kids wanted to do something really positive and that is why they chose really positive images from their community,” said Katrina Newell from New Lodge Arts.

“Their cow portrays a positive image of New Lodge as opposed to the negative image of the area which is quite often focused on.”
