Newington advance in Border Cup after win in Comber

By Staff Reporter
Comber Rec 1 -- Newington FC 4

Newington travelled to Comber last Saturday to take on Comber Rec in Round 2 of the NAFL Border Cup.

Before long Newington worked their way into the game; picking up the pace and dictating the rhythm of play.

The midfield four of Dee Heaney, Peter Gilgunn, Kevin Trainor and Eamonn Lindsay began causing Comber all sorts of problems.

Before half time Ton’s persistence finally paid off. Cormac Mullan scored with a volley from 35 yards following a poor clearance from a Newington corner.

Newington’s management team was forced into reshuffling their pack at half time due to an injury to Kevin Trainor, with Joseph Meaney replacing the Glengormley man.

Captain Sean Adams settled a few Newington nerves early in the second half when he headed home a Lindsay corner.

A further substitution saw the hard-working Heaney replaced by Neil Quinn. Quinn, returning from long-term injury, slotted into his usual role up front with the impressive Ryan Dunlop filling the vacant midfield position.

With 20 minutes remaining Comber struck back through Ryan Tumelty. Newington’s defence failed to deal with a cross and Comber’s hit-man gave the home side a life line.

With fresh drive and impetus Comber came forward in search of an equaliser and were given an excellent opportunity to draw level when they were awarded a  penalty with a quarter of an hour to play. However,  ‘keeper Smyth reacted well to deny the hosts.

Momentum switched in Newington’s favour and minutes later Peter Gilgunn sealed Newington’s place in the next round, stroking the ball past the oncoming ‘keeper following a great interception.

Newington made their final substitution late in the game, Sean McAuley replacing the injured Brannigan. With time all but up Newington scored their fourth goal of the game. Quinn broke the offside trap and with only the ‘keeper to beat selflessly passed to Lindsay who scored on his 30th birthday.

Newington have drawn Dromara Village in Round 3 of the Border Cup. The match will take place at Richardson Park, Dunmurry at 2pm on October 1.

Everyone at Newington YC FC would like to wish Brendan Crossan and his wife-to-be Seánín all the very best on their wedding day this Thursday, 8 September.
