Vehicle hijacked in A’Town

A DELIVERY van carrying a large number of newspapers for delivery to shops in West Belfast has been hijacked near Casement Park. The incident took place at around 6.30am on Friday morning after the driver of the van was approached by two males who demanded that he hand over the keys to the vehicle.

No-one was injured in the incident, however the vehicle – a white-coloured van – has yet to be recovered.

Upper Falls Sinn Féin Councillor Emma Groves condemned the hijacking.

“It’s a disgrace that this should happen to people when they are trying to make a living,” said Councillor Groves.

“I would urge all companies conducting business or making deliveries at this time of the morning to step up their personal security and liaise with police if they have any concerns.”

Detectives in Grosvenor Road are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to come forward.

Describing the hijackers involved in the crime, a police spokesperson said: “The first hijacker is described as being of slim build, approximately 5’9″ in height, dressed all in black and wearing a black baseball hat.

“The second hijacker is described as wearing blue jeans and a white top.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact CID in Grosvenor Road on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
