A doctors’ surgery in the centre of Glengormley suffered extensive damage at the weekend when a gang of youths smashed through the front windows in an orgy of destruction.
The attack happened on Friday evening (October 16) and caused extensive damage to the Tramways Medical Centre. GP Colin Spence says they will now reluctantly have to look at installing shutters due to repeated incidents.
He told the North Belfast News it is the worst attack they have experienced in almost 20 years.
“This is a community property but we would still have a window broken once or twice a month but never like this,” he said. “This is just too much and we will have to look at putting shutters on the building. It’s a shame because a medical facility like this shouldn’t be targeted as it is here to service the community, but we are left with little choice.”
The surgery has had toughened glass fitted but the determined culprits were able to smash through the reinforced panes. The alarm was only raised on Monday morning when staff returned to work after the weekend.
Dr Spence appealed to those responsible to cease their attacks.
“I would appeal to the people to treat us with respect, which is how we treat the community. We know it’s sheer vandalism and nothing else because there’s nobody has a grudge against us. We are only about helping people.”
A PSNI spokeswoman confirmed this week that they were investigating the incident.
