SDLP Lower Falls Councillor Colin Keenan has angrily condemned those responsible for attacking buses on the Springfield Road.

The attacks took place last Wednesday and Thursday, leaving some passengers badly shaken.

“I appeal to those people throwing stones at passing buses to stop immediately,” said Councillor Keenan.

“I spoke to a passenger on the bus who told me that they were inches from the stone as it smashed the window and brought the bus to a halt.  Not only does this put extra strain on Translink to provide an alternative bus for the local community, it also could have resulted in seriously or fatal injury to a passenger or the driver.”

A spokesperson for Translink confirmed that one bus window had been broken and a driver and passengers “left shaken” by the attacks, but that fortunately no injuries were sustained as a result of the stone-throwing.

“We condemn all incidents of anti-social behaviour against our vehicles and employees,” said the spokesperson for the bus company.

“We also operate a cash reward scheme offering up to £1,000 reward to any member of the public who witnesses any incidents of vandalism, trespass or assault against a member of staff and is prepared to give evidence in court.”
