The standard of street cleaning in Belfast should be the same whether you live on the Malone Road or the Cliftonville Road, a local MLA has said.
North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Carál Ní Chuilín was speaking after a walkabout of the Cliftonville area with officials from Belfast City Council and government departments last Friday.
A range of issues from dog fouling, street sweeping, damaged footpaths and blocked gutters causing flooding, were discussed with the statutory agencies responsible.
After the walkabout Carál Ní Chuilín called for a top rate cleansing service for North Belfast residents.
“A first class cleansing service is one of the key demands from residents of North Belfast attending fortnightly local multi-agency meetings,” she said.
“It shouldn't matter if you live on the Malone Road or the Cliftonville Road an equality of service needs to be delivered as standard practice.
“Residents should not settle for a substandard service but all too often won't complain formally about issues like dog fouling or poor cleansing.”
She said there is also a responsibility on local people to work with the City Council when their cars are blocking access for cleansing teams.
“We've managed to propose solutions to all the issues raised and will be monitoring this situation on a regular basis.
“This was a good day’s work and every problem confronted here, with good will and hard work by us all has a sensible solution.”
