St Gall’s v Lámh Dhearg - Antrim Senior Football Championship Final Saturday, Casement Park, 7pm

Series of events to mark last county finals at ‘old’ Casement

By Staff Reporter

Antrim GAA have planned a series of events to mark the last county finals at Casement Park before major redevelopment work starts at the Andersonstown venue.

To start club finals weekend, there will be a special lecture on the history of the GAA in Antrim in Casement Social Club on Friday 23 September, followed by a GAA themed quiz.

The talk will be delivered by noted GAA historian Gilly McElhatton and will begin at 6.30pm.

A GAA quiz will begin at 7.30pm. Individual entry is £5, no matter what size the team!

The winners will receive a weekend pass to both club finals and all proceeds will go towards funding the Dunsilly – Centre of Participation project.

Prior to Saturday’s SFC Final, young players from clubs right across the county will proudly parade their colours on the pitch at Casement.

Brendan Mulgrew, County PRO explained why the county board is making an extra effort to turn this year’s senior finals into county wide occasions.

“If the redevelopment of Casement goes as we hope it will, then there is a possibility that this year’s club finals will be the last to be played in the ‘old’ Casement,” said Brendan.

“For this reason, and because our club finals represent the culmination of club activity in the county, as a Coiste Bainisti we want to make the weekend as inclusive and as celebratory as possible.

“We have asked each club in Antrim send a number of juveniles, preferably a mixture of boys and girls, to parade in their club colours and where possible behind their club banners, before the senior football final on Saturday night.

“The ‘parade of clubs’ will take place immediately prior to throw in when there should be a big crowd in the stand.

“In this way all clubs get a final appearance in Casement while some young people, who may not have appeared there before, get a chance to walk the famous pitch.

“It is important the club finals are treated as a county wide event. We will have a special souvenir programme on sale and we are looking forward to two great Antrim Gaelic days on Saturday and Sunday.”

If your club wishes to take part in the parade of clubs, you must register your interest beforehand by contacting Brendan on email address pro.antrim@gaa.ie.
