Saints prey on Belfast Star

Belfast Star 61 -- DCU Saints 84

BelfasT Star slumped to a second consecutive home defeat on Saturday night when they went down to Dublin’s DCU Saints in La Salle.

The defeat means Danny Fulton’s charges still remain winless four games into the season while Saints maintained their unbeaten record.

The game was still tight enough going into the second half, with Star trailing 37-43 having been down 13-21 at the end of the first.  So the momentum was with Star at the break but Saints showed their strength in depth as they were able to bring the towering Trimmer, Darling and Glover off the bench mid-way through the third quarter to ensure the Dublin side stayed ahead.  But it was the manner of the home side’s demise in the final quarter that left Head Coach Fulton fuming. “We lost that last period 21-7 and at this level you just can’t do that and expect to get anything out of a game,” he said. American import Tyson Johnson top scored for the home side on 19 with Paul Cummins contributing 18. For Saints, Provisors (19), Darling (17) and Glover (14) led the scorers.

The ladies of Ulster Rockets, meanwhile, notched up their second Super League win in a row with an easy 83-50 victory over Liffey Celtics in part one of the La Salle double-header.

American Megan Houlihan netted 21 points of the total and captain Mairead McNally added 19 but such was the all-round Rockets performance that all 12 squad members got on the score sheet.
