Police investigating an arson  attack on a house on the Ormeau Road say they have not ruled out a sectarian motive.

The PSNI spokesman was speaking after the house in Ava Street was attacked late last Thursday night (March 15). At approximately 11.50pm, a front window of the house was smashed and a front door was scorch-damaged by ignited petrol. A resident of the house managed to extinguish the fire and no-one was injured in the incident.

SDLP South Belfast Councillor Kate Mullan spoke of her relief that the homeowner had escaped injury.

“I am relieved that the occupant of the house was unharmed, but this is nevertheless a very worrying incident which will have a major impact on the person in the property,” she said.

“I would urge anyone with any information to get in touch with the PSNI or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Meanwhile, a number of homes in Fortuna Street off the Donegall Road were evacuated on Friday night (March 16) after a suspect device was found.

It’s thought the device may have been there for a number of days after having failed to detonate. The object was removed by army technical officers for further examination and residents were allowed to return to their homes after several hours.

Anyone with information about either incident is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
