Poleglass man says he’s being tortured

A GLENBAWN pensioner says he’s being “tortured” by groups of youths and that he is the victim of “nothing but pure vandalism” after the shed where he keeps his motorcycle was destroyed by vandals.

72-year-old Glenbawn Crescent man Alfie Burrows was visiting his wife in a local nursing home when his son phoned him on Friday afternoon telling him that a number of thugs were trying to gain entry to his shed. Alfie told the Andersonstown News that the attack on his home was “the latest in a long series of incidents”.

“The ones who did this have no fear at all as they destroyed the shed in broad daylight,” he said. “I was down visiting my wife, it was around 3pm on Friday when my son phoned saying I better get back home as they were trying to break into the shed. I can only guess they were trying to take my scooter.”

Alfie says he uses the scooter to get to the shops “or sometimes I would use it to go and see my wife”.

“Just say that  that crowd had’ve got the bike, what damage would have been caused then? I’ve lived in Glenbawn for over 20 years and it’s not getting any easier – if anything it is getting worse,” he said.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Stephen Magennis condemned those behind the attack.

“Mr Burrows lives in a cul-de-sac and usually it is quite quiet. This attack will not be tolerated and we will do whatever is needed to help him.”

A spokesperson for the PSNI said they are appealing for information about the incident.

“It was reported that a group of local youths climbed on to the roof of the shed and caused substantial damage to it,” the spokesperson added.
