The Crumlin Star hosted the Marcella Fitzpatrick Memorial mixed pairs darts competition on Saturday to raise funds for the MacMillan Cancer Trust.

Brian George with playing partner Jane Goodall were the shining lights beating ‘Soupy’ Campbell and Marie Donnelly in an entertaining final.

Marcella Fitzpatrick played darts for many years until an arm injury forced her to hang up the flights and after being diagnosed with cancer, Marcella benefited from the expert care of the MacMillan Nurses.

The success of the competition has prompted the organisers to pencil in an event for 2012.

All the lady dart players  play out of the Village Tavern in Ligoniel or the Jamaica Inn while the men  represent several teams from the North Belfast and Central Dart leagues.

However, from the off the ladies gave notice that they were not along for the ride and in many cases they saved the men’s blushes with some expert finishing, most notably Patricia Haywood’s 75 checkout in her first round win with partner Ian Haywood.
