Martin Fagan pockets captains’ prize

Rossa Golf Society

Stevie McCourt’s captain’s day took the Rossa golf society to his home course of Rockmount, which as usual was in tremendous condition.

As expected on such a big day a full turn out of members teed it up all with high hopes of capturing first prize and having his autograph etched on the much sought-after captain’s cup.

Picking a winner would be tough as a lot of players were in great form of late, particularly Chippy McCabe and John Taggart, just back from his stint with Butch, not to forget Jim Murphy – a Rockmount member – and also Terry King, a course specialist, who seems to excel here every time.

Out of the blocks first was society veteran Sean Duffin playing some cracking golf and soon began notching up the points. Jim Murphy soon got in on the act, he too was playing nice and steady and started to rattle in the putts.

Nearest the pin prize went to none other than Jimmy Gibson. While the rest of us were using nine irons and wedges, Jimmy hit a beautiful five wood to within 12 inches of the pin, which he duly sunk for his two.

Longest drive was won by John Taggart on the 18th when he murdered a Titleist down the heart of the fairway.

Meanwhile the pack were closing in and some players began to play some serious golf. Terry King and Martin Fagan both began to burn up the course, Fagan’s superb driving and long irons nosed him ahead while King’s immaculate chipping and putting kept him in touch.

Jimmy Carmichael finished strong on the back 9 but alas too little too late.

At the close of play Martin Fagan headed the field and captured the coveted cup. Martin played some fantastic golf all day, especially along the home stretch.

Victory was put down to his accurate driving which around Rockmount is a remarkable feat. Congratulations to him and all the prize winners.

Many thanks to our captain Stevie McCourt for a super day and also to all at Rockmount for their fine hospitality.

Next Rossa outing is Sunday 18 September at Dunmurry, tee off 10.35am. Hope to see you all there.
