A man remains in a critical condition in hospital this morning after being subjected to a vicious attack in Ardoyne in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The man, understood to be a member of the Travelling community who lives locally, was set upon in Flax Street by a number of persons around 5.25am.

The victim, described as being in his 40s, sustained head injuries in the attack. He is described as being in a critical but stable condition.

North Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said he’s concerned at the attack.

“These reports of a man having been seriously assaulted in the Flax Street area of Ardoyne in the early hours of Sunday Morning are very worrying,” he said.

“I would appeal for anyone who witnessed this attack or has any information in relation to this crime to come forward.

“It is my understanding that the victim remains in a serious condition and I hope he makes a full recovery.”

Detective Inspector Heather Whoriskey appealed appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time of the assault and who has any information which may be of assistance to the investigation to contact detectives at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference 335 17/07/16.
