Newcastle League - Division 2

The Colts moved a step closer to their first ever league title and second successive promotion when they emerged with all three points from Annalong on Saturday thanks to a wonder strike from Aidan Magee.

In a seven-goal thriller, the Colts drew first blood when Conor Rea won the ball wide on the right and fed Darragh Brownlee who slipped his man to rifle home from 12 yards.

Annalong equalised five minutes later, however, midway through the half Brownlee latched on to a through ball from Connolly and hooked a super goal over the keeper.

It was a real battle in the middle of the park as Rea, Cassidy, Curran and Doherty competed well against a strengthened Annalong midfield.

The home team equalised again when their forward, who looked offside, ran free to score.

The home team started the second half well and the back four of Jason Croskery, Artherton, McDonnell and Connolly stood firm.

Young McDonnell was excellent against a very good striker who demolished the Colts last year in a cup game.

Midway through the half, Annalong took the lead but with 20 minutes to go the Colts rallied and soon equalised when a Polley cross was forced over the line by Artherton.

Brownlee, who was excellent throughout, converted at the back post but it was chalked offside, before Magee was fed on the right wing and his lofted effort sailed over the keeper into the far corner of the net for the winner.

The Colts saw out the remaining seven minutes confidently for a great result.

COLTS: Overend, J Croskery (Magee), Artherton, McDonnell (Early), Connolly,  Curran,  Cassidy, Rea (Polley), C Croskery, Doherty, Brownlee.
