On behalf of the Republican Network for Unity (RNU), I would like to clarify a number of points regarding a recent petition in the Newington and Parkside areas, after a number of misleading texts were published in the North Belfast News.
RNU activists consulted the Newington/Parkside community about our organisation wanting to erect a new commemorative mural of local republican volunteers and civilians killed during the recent conflict in the area. We explained who RNU was and petitioned every household and presented residents with an image of what the proposed mural would look like etc. We were pleased to receive over 400 positive responses and our intention in the coming months is to commission a fitting tribute in the district.
Our petition had nothing whatsoever to do with the new Intercomm/ Groundwork mural and it was purely coincidental that we consulted local people about a new mural in the same week that the above wall art was being erected.
