Venues unveiled for 2013 sporting event

SOME OF South Belfast’s most popular sporting facilities have made the list of venues to be used at the World Police and Fire Games. The games, which will take place from 1st to 10th August 2013, are anticipated to welcome around 10,000 competitors and an additional 15,000 friends and family for the 10-day event and is one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Council refuse to empty bins if liners aren’t tied

A CARRYDUFF man who was forced to empty his own bin after a “bizarre” health and safety concern meant it was left untouched by binmen has hit out at Castlereagh Borough Council. John McGoran of Manse Drive went out to collect his wheelie bin last week only to find it still full outside his home. He was further baffled when he found a note stuck to the bin stating staff had left it untouched as he had failed to tie the binliner inside it.

Boost for anti-arcade campaign

PLANS for an amusement arcade in a quiet Finaghy estate have suffered a major setback, following a meeting of Belfast City Council. A special meeting of the council’s Licensing Committee was held last week, attended by the applicant and Erinvale residents opposed to the gambling venue opening on their doorstep.

‘Wait and see’ on drink fines

Local residents are taking a ‘wait and see’ approach to the news that Justice Minister David Ford is introducing an on-the-spot fine for being drunk in public. Two levels of penalties will be given from 6 June that could cost drinkers considerably more than a taxi and a kebab on their way home.

Mary to have flaming good time

A LOCAL pensioner will be having a flaming good week, as she has been selected to carry the Olympic torch as it makes its journey across the North. Ormeau volunteer worker Mary McCarney was chosen from thousands of worthy applicants to run a stretch of the torch route this Thursday, and will be cheered on by hundreds of well-wishers as she carries the flame in the Co Derry town of Magherafelt.

Man slashed in day time attack

A MAN who was slashed in broad daylight as he made his way along the Ormeau Road has revealed how the attackers threatened to cut his throat. The savage incident, which occurred around 5pm last Thursday May 31, left the 29-year-old victim requiring hospital treatment after he was repeatedly slashed with a Stanley knife by two men who had demanded his wallet.
