Mum-to-be’s desperate visa appeal

A disabled and pregnant Ardoyne woman, whose partner faces deportation to Pakistan after his visa application was rejected, says she fears their child will be raised without its father if he is ordered to leave the country. Mary-Ann Larkin, who suffers from congenital heart disease and uses crutches and a wheelchair, is four months pregnant with her partner Mohammad Javad’s child.

Friend tackles mental health issues

A North Belfast man who lost a close friend to suicide four years ago has set up a new initiative designed at helping young footballers deal with mental health issues. New Lodge man Joseph Donnelly, who lost his friend Thomas ‘Tammy Tucker’ McLaughlin in 2008, has formed the Tackling Against Mental Health Issues Football Community (TAMHI FC) to advise clubs on how to have a positive impact on the mental wellbeing of their players.

Gerard lights the way for others

A North Belfast man who lost his son to suicide seven years ago has been chosen as one of the London 2012 Olympic torchbearers who will carry the iconic flame across the North. Oldpark man Gerard McCartan, whose son Danny took his own life in 2005, has been a member of PIPS suicide support group along with his wife Carol for a number of years campaigning for better mental health care in the north.

Suspected cannabis factory on Serpentine

Police in North Belfast discovered a suspected cannabis factory at a house on the Serpentine Road this week. The search was carried out on Tuesday afternoon (March 20) and approximately 50 cannabis plants were seized. During the policing operation a quantity of suspected cocaine was discovered at another property in the area. A number of items were seized from both premises.
