Burns the Brave takes on Insane McShane

By Kieran Hughes

A brave amateur boxer from North Belfast who stepped in to the ring with Olympic gold medallist Paddy Barnes last month to raise money for charity is getting ready for his next fundraising challenge – this time against a professional.

Next week Conor Burns will go head-to-head with Belfast pro Daniel ‘Insane’ McShane to raise money for an Antrim Road toddler who suffers from an extremely rare brain condition.

Sophia Magee was only six weeks old when she was diagnosed with polymicrogyria, which causes intellectual disabilities, respiratory problems and seizures. Sophia’s mum and dad now hope to raise £250,000 need to bring their nine-month-old  daughter to Canada to see a consultant who specializes in the condition.

Cavehill man Conor, who was defeated by Paddy Barnes in the PIPS fundraiser last month, is again putting his chin on the line for charity.

His clash with 18-year-old McShane, who turned pro this year, is the top of the bill at the Battle of Belfast for Wee Sophia event at the Emerald Roadhouse in West Belfast on Saturday, November 17 (8pm).

“I’m really looking forward to it, I just want to win and bring the trophy back to North Belfast,” said Conor. “It’s for a great cause and I just want as many people as possible to come out and support it.”

Tickets are £5 and are available at the Emerald Roadhouse or on the door.
