Brannigan right man for the job

By Staff Reporter

The news that South Belfast business leader Terence Brannigan has been appointed to chair the board of the Maze-Long Kesh development body should hearten those who want to see decisive steps taken to transform this one-time symbol of division into a beacon of reconciliation.

Throughout his business career, the Glentoran chairman has emphasised the need for fair play and partnership.

Those values should underpin Mr Brannigan’s approach as chair of a dynamic board representing all shades of opinion.

The H-Block hospital where the hunger strikers died will be the centrepoint of a conflict transformation complex on the 370-acre site. That should be seen as an opportunity to heal the wounds of the past rather than a way to settle old scores. We suspect Terence Brannigan understands that and we look forward to him leading a board which will be focused on the future while respecting the past.
