THE new public artwork to be installed at unsightly hoardings on the Lisburn Road is a “vibrant reflection” of the local community, according to local business members.
The eye-catching mural-like artwork has been completed, and will be unveiled next month at the lower Lisburn Road location.
The move will be a relief to local traders and residents who are fed up staring at the ugly hoardings which attract graffiti and fly-posters.
Ciara McVeigh of the Lisburn Road Business Association, who runs a nearby sandwich bar, has been involved with the steering group which helped choose the artwork in conjunction with Belfast City Council. She is satisfied the piece will be a worthy addition to the Lisburn Road landscape.
The display will decorate the temporary hoardings before finding a permanent home in Drumglass Park further up the road.
“Last week the final piece was signed off, and we all agree it is a fantastic piece of work,” Ms McVeigh said.
“I don’t want to reveal too much about it to spoil the surprise once it’s unveiled, but I can say it’s a fantastically detailed image of the road and is a colourful, vibrant reflection of the road and those who live and work on it.
“It will definitely further promote the sense of ownership and pride felt on the Lisburn Road and will brighten up the area while those buildings behind the hoardings are restored.”
A spokesperson for Belfast City Council confirmed the launch of the new work would take place sometime in October.
