The Belfast Media Group’s very own Ed McGinley, of Annadale Striders, had the race of his life in Dublin on Sunday to take the Irish InterClub Cross Country title at Santry. The 29 year-old, who is sports editor of the South Belfast News and the North Belfast News,  led from the start to finish first in the 12 kilometre event, but had a trio of Clonliffe Harriers runners in attendance from early on.

However, with four kilometres remaining Finaghy man McGinley made his break, which lengthened to a 100 metres victory over Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu at the finish line.

This is the first win by an athlete from the North in this event since Gary Murray’s triumph five years ago.

“While I knew I was in good shape I never believed I could win,” a jubilant McGinley said after the race.

“I have been inconsistent lately but today everything just came together.”

Former Rathmore College student McGinley is the first member of the Annadale club to win the All-Ireland title and now plans to race in the English Inter Counties Championships.

Congratulations to Ed from all his friends and colleagues in the Belfast Media Group.
